What is EXIF data?
EXIF data is photo metadata stored inside image files. It can include camera settings, timestamps, device details and sometimes GPS location if the device or app saved it.

Why EXIF data can matter for privacy
EXIF data is not automatically harmful, but it can add private context when a photo is shared outside a trusted place.
GPS metadata can reveal where a photo was taken. Timestamps can reveal when something happened. Camera and device metadata can add technical context about the image.
Visible image content can still reveal private information even after metadata removal, including faces, addresses, documents, signs or reflections.
Does every photo contain EXIF data?
Many phone and camera photos contain EXIF data, especially JPG photos captured directly by a device.
Screenshots may contain less EXIF metadata, while social platforms may remove, rewrite or replace metadata during upload.
Exported or edited files may also change metadata depending on the app and export settings.
How to check EXIF data
You can check EXIF data with operating system file details, photo apps, metadata viewers or local tools. For private images, local tools are often preferable to upload-based checkers.
